Death Anniv. of Trần Tế Xương (05-09-1870 – 29-01-1907)

Trần Tế Xương, whose real name was Trần Duy Uyên, was called Tú Xương, alias Mặc Trai, also known as Mộng Tích, was a famous satiric poet of Việt Nam of the 19th century. He was born on 05th September 1870 in Vị Xuyên Village, Mỹ Lộc District, Nam Định Province. He was very intelligent and keen on satire. However, he didn’t have good luck with the exams. Being not succeeded in competition-examinations 8 times created a profound imprint in his mind. It’s possible to say that exams fail, and poverty were his abundant subjects. Being born, and grown up in feudal and colonial regime, his works honestly and vividly described that transitional picture of society, representing his state of mind. It was considered as an indictment to accuse of the colonial and feudal society in the late half of the 19th century.

On 20th January 2007, the Vietnamese Ministry of Posts & Telematics (MPT) issues the stampset “Death centenary of Trần Tế Xương (1870 - 1907)”, 01 value of 1,000 đ. The stamp features a portrait of the Poet against the image of his humble and hard - working wife, who had quite an effect on his poetic works.
